In this spirit, we offer this directory of faith communities, showing the commitment of each to ensuring that LGBTQ+ people served by PFLAG Niceville are safe, celebrated, empowered and loved in local places of worship.
Like all of us, this directory is a work in progress. We recognize that faith communities evolve over time. Stages of Celebrating LGBTQIA+ people in Faith Communities:
Stage 1 Anti-Gay (Red): “We don’t want you here. You’re going to hell. We will protest Pride events.”
No red stage churches submitted to PFLAG Niceville at the moment.
Stage 2 Welcoming (Orange): “Come to meetings and listen. If you let God make you straight, you can go to heaven. You will probably not be able to participate in church leadership or all church rituals.”
Orange: Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Ft. Walton Beach Stake
Stage 3 Accepting (Yellow): “Come and stay, but you must be celibate (not have a partner). You might not be able to participate in church leadership or all rituals (including weddings), or if you do, don’t talk about LGBTQ+ issues.
Mary Esther United Methodist Church
Stage 4 Affirming (White): “Come with your partner and be part of us. We encourage you and your partner to participate in church leadership and all church rituals (including weddings).”
Stage 5 Celebrating (Green): “We actively seek out and center queer voices in leadership and rituals.”
